Why the world will be focused on Copenhagen this DecemberCOP15, or Conference of Parties, is the United Nations Climate Change Conference that will be held in Copenhagen from the 7th to the 18th of December, 2009. The aim of this conference is to make decisions, formulate policy and put protocols in place that will help stabilize the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere and prevent further man-made climate changes. Several thousand delegates from the 192 countries that have signed the United Nations Framework Climate Change Convention (UNFCCC) will be attending. These will include heads of state, ministers, senior government officials, and several observer organizations. ![]() Their mission in Copenhagen is critical. The Danish Government, which is hosting the event, has described COP15 as “the crucial conference ... the last chance to achieve an agreement” in accordance with the Kyoto Protocol. Their objective for the meeting is nothing short of “global agreement including all the countries of the world.” Achieving this degree of multilateral cooperation would be a historic first — not only for the UN but for mankind.
